Here’s how the number break down by profession in the BLS.gov report:

• Skin care specialists are predicted to make the biggest job gains. The skin care industry is expected to grow 25% and add 11,700 new jobs over the next decade. “The desire among women and a growing number of men to reduce the effects of aging and to lead a healthier lifestyle through better grooming should result in employment growth, including skin treatments for relaxation and well-being.”
• Nail technicians are expected to be in demand through 2020. Employment for licensed nail technicians is expected to grow over 17% and add over 13,600 new jobs. “Manicures and pedicures will continue to be in demand by individuals at all income levels.”
• Hair stylists and barbers jobs are projected to grow 14% and over 100,900 new cosmetology jobs are predicted to be added. “Demand for hair coloring, hair straightening, and other advanced hair treatments has increased in recent years, a trend that is expected to continue over the coming decade.”
• The one area where jobs were predicted to drop was for shampooers.  The BLS predicted a 9% decline in jobs because more and more stylists and barbers are performing this service themselves.

Interestingly, the BLS noted that the actual services these beauty professionals will be offering could change with the economy.  Beauty professionals could find themselves performing more “mini” services to accommodate their clients’ budgets. For example, estheticians may be giving more mini-facials. Nail technicians may be doing more quickie manicures and pedicures.

Shellac manicures are the biggest trend in the nail industry right now. But you don’t have to go to your nail technician to get a professional shellac manicure. You can easily do a shellac manicure on your own nails if you have the right nail polish and an UV light. With just a few easy steps, you’ll have a beautiful DIY shellac manicure that will last up to 14 days.

A shellac manicure will last much longer than if you were using regular nail polish and there’s no drying time! Shellac polish dries instantly under the UV light so you don’t risk any smudging. The shellac polish also adds a layer to the nail, making it stronger and less likely to break.

Here’s what you’ll need for your DIY shellac manicure:

• Shellac nail polish
• UV Light Machine
• A regular manicuring kit

Here are the steps for a DIY shellac manicure:

1. Pick out your shellac nail color.
2. Use your regular manicure kit to buff up your nails. Remove all previous nail polish and flakey skin so when you put on the shellac polish it won’t crack or chip.
3. Now comes the fun part! Start applying the shellac nail polish. It’s just like a regular manicure where you apply a base coat, two coats of the color, and a top coat. Between each step however, you put your hand in the UV light machine for two minutes to bake the shellac nail polish on to your nail.
4. After you have applied each coat of shellac nail polsh and baked it under the UV light, rub each nail with alcohol to remove the sticky element that accumulates on top of the nail polish.

Keratin is a natural protein that’s found in the hair. During a keratin treatment, the protein fills in gaps in the hair cuticle that are cracked, dry, or damaged, and forms a protective layer around the hair. This makes the hair smoother, shinier, and straighter.  A treatment will typically last between 2 to 4 months, depending on how often you wash your hair.

A keratin treatment can run upwards of $300 in a salon. There are many different keratin products on the market right now, so please follow the manufacturer’s directions for whichever product you’re using.  Most keratin manufacturers require you to be certified to use their product to ensure you’re using it correctly and safely.

Here’s what you’ll need:

• Keratin product
• Mixing bowl
• Applicator brush
• Comb
• Plastic gloves
• Hair dryer
• Round brush or paddle brush
• Flat iron
• Hair clips

Here’s how to perform a keratin hair treatment:

• Begin by washing the hair with a cleansing shampoo. Do not condition.
• Apply the keratin to the hair like you would for a color service. Section the hair into quadrants, starting at the bottom of the head and work your way up to the crown. Apply a small amount of product to the brush, then comb through evenly.
• Wait 20 minutes for the product to set.
• Blow dry the hair using a round brush or paddle brush.
• Use a flat iron on a high heat setting to seal the product into the hair. Flat iron each section of hair 8 to 10 times.
• Tell your client not to wash or get their hair wet for 72 hours. They should try to keep the hair as straight as possible during this time.

You should also tell your client to use a sulfate-free shampoo to make the treatment last longer. Other shampoos will get into the hair shaft and push the keratin product out.

2013 PBA | NCA Sally Beauty Scholarship

Thirteen beauty school scholarships are being funded by Sally Beauty Supply and administered by the Professional Beauty Association. There are two different categories you can apply to:

• Seven $1,000 scholarships will be awarded to high school graduates that want to get into the cosmetology profession.
• Six $500 scholarships will be awarded to current PBA | NCA members already enrolled in a cosmetology program.

The applications deadline is November 15, 2012. Scholarships will be awarded at ISSE Long Beach 2013.

2012 PBA | NCA Minerva Beauty Scholarship

Five $1,000 scholarships, funded through Minerva Beauty, Inc., a manufacturer of salon equipment, will be awarded to students already enrolled in a cosmetology program.

The applications deadline is June 15, 2012. Scholarships will be awarded at ISSE Midwest 2012.

The Alice Madden Barton Scholarship Program

If you are a high school student, or already enrolled in a cosmetology or barbering program, you can qualify to apply for the Alice Madden Barton Scholarship Program.

You need to show your dedication to working in cosmetology. Scholarships are awarded twice a year in January and July. The deadlines for applications are June 30 and December 31.

The Joe Francis Haircare Scholarship Foundation

The Joe Francis Haircare Scholarship is in honor of Joe Francis (1933-1994), the founder of The Barbers Corporation who was always looked for ways to help others find opportunities in the salon business.

For this beauty school scholarship, you must be actively applying to a cosmetology or barber school or be currently enrolled in a program. Esthetician or nail technician students are not eligible.

Applications are collected through January 1 and June 1 of every year. The winners are awarded chosen by a independent committee and awarded $1,000 each towards tuition

The Aurie J. Gosnell Scholarship

This $1,250 beauty school scholarship is sponsored by the National-Interstate Council of State Boards of Cosmetology. To apply, you must be training for a career in cosmetology, esthetics, or nail technology, or enroll in beauty school within 6 months of being awarded of the scholarship. You must send in three letters of recommendation and a personal essay with a minimum of 250 words.

The deadline for this scholarship is May 31, 2012.

Use Pinterest to create a portfolio of your best work. Upload the photos of your straight to Pinterest, or if you have your own website, copy and paste the URL of what you’d like to ‘pin’. Separate your ‘pins’ on to different boards by themes. For example, have a different board for Makeup, Nails, Hair Coloring, Hair Cuts, Updos, etc. This is a great way to showcase your work in an organized fashion to potential employers and potential clients!

Start following your friends and other notable people in the beauty industry on Pinterest. Their ‘pins’ can be a source of inspiration for styles and trends you might want to recreate. If you start ‘liking’ and ‘repinning’ their content, they’ll likely do the same for you and your ‘pins’. The more times your stuff is ‘repinned’, the more people are seeing your great work online!
